If you’re trying to tell if you have termites, here’s some expert research regarding how they form new colonies and lay termite eggs. Let’s hope it’s not anywhere near your home.

A new colony starts with a swarm. Winged swarmer termites develop in more mature colonies and fly away from the security of their home colony to try to start a new one of their own. They never look back.

Hundreds or even thousands of termite swarmers may make this flight, but few survive. The odds are pretty bad according to the Texas A&M University Department of Entomology: “Termites are weak fliers and must rely on wind currents to carry them to new habitats. Only a small percentage of swarmers survive to develop colonies; most fall prey to birds, toads, insects and other predators, and many die from dehydration or injury.”

The swarmers are an important indicator that the termite colony has found access into your home, and a professional should be called for a full inspection.

Of the survivors, a king and queen will begin to reproduce. “Successful reproductive pairs land, lose their wings and seek cover under rocks or other moist materials. A pair will make a very small nest before mating. Initially, the new queen termite lays only a few eggs. The male remains with the female and helps care for developing eggs and the larva that hatch,” according to Texas A&M University Department of Entomology.

Termite eggs are unable to survive without the care and support of the colony they have been born into, but the potential for the colony to survive is lost without them.

Most of these termite eggs will become termite workers, destroying wood as they find food and bring it back to the rest of the colony. These are the bad guys. “The worker caste is responsible for the damage that makes termites an economically important problem.” Mud tunnels constructed by the worker termites as they seek food are one of the things to look for when inspecting your home for termite attack.
