Insulation helps keep your home at a comfortable temperature and reduces the amount of energy used on heating and cooling. It also provides a noise reduction function, ensuring you’re not exposed to unwanted outdoor sounds.

attic insulation

If you’ve noticed drafts, cold floors, fluctuating temperatures or higher utility bills, your wall and attic insulation may be insufficient. Choosing the right insulation can keep your home more comfortable while probably saving you money. Terminix® offers comprehensive insulation services designed to keep your home snug this winter and beyond.

How insulation works

In the colder months, heat flows from the heated areas of your house to unheated spaces, including your attic, basement, garage and even outdoors. Your heating system must then replace the heat that’s lost. In the summer, heat flows from outside into your house, and your air conditioner works to remove the extra heat.

Insulation provides resistance to this heat flow and helps your home stand up to the heat and cold, lowering your utility bills. An insulator material’s ability to slow heat flow is measured in thermal resistance, or R-Value. A higher R-Value means that the product offers a stronger barrier against heat flow, which translates into a more effective insulation.

Types of insulation

  • Foam insulation: Foam insulation comes in different types, like board, spray and block. It is used in unfinished walls, floors, ceilings and low-slope roofs and provides an R-value of 3.8 to 5.0 per inch.

  • Cellulose insulation: Cellulose insulation is usually made from 80 percent recycled materials. It’s used as loose fill in walls, vaulted ceilings and open attics, and can be added on top of existing insulation. Cellulose insulation contains an insecticide that controls pests and provides an R-value of 3.6 to 3.8 per inch.

  • Fiberglass insulation: Fiberglass comes in batts (blanket insulation) and as loose fill. It’s used in walls, ceilings, attics and floors, and has an R-value anywhere from 2.2 to 2.9 per inch, depending on the density you choose.

Terminix Attic Insulation Service will fill in the gaps of your deteriorating insulation by installing more efficient cellulose insulation on top of your existing insulation or directly between attic joists. The product we use is Energy Star certified, made from 85 percent recycled materials, flame retardant and noise reducing.
